The Republican Party has been using the issue of abortion as a means of bringing Pro-Life voters to the polls for decades. Those of us who respect life and are outraged by the 1.3 million innocent lives terminated every year in this country by abortionists, have consistently voted for candidates who claim to share our view on abortion. Despite our efforts and their campaign promises, the genocide continues unabated.

In 2000 alone, more babies were killed by abortion than the number of Americans killed in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq Wars combined.

We are led to believe that the only way to stop abortion on demand is to over-turn the Roe v. Wade decision in the U.S. Supreme Court. However, that is not the only legal means to end the abomination.

At any time, Congress could pass and the President could sign into law a moratorium on any legally held practice within the United States. Such a measure could be enacted to prevent more abortions from occurring. There is in fact, legal precedence for such action, even in regards to such a controversial issue.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a bill which placed an 18 month moratorium on cross-town school busing. This action took place after the Supreme Court unanimously decided that busing for the promotion of integration was constitutional (Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, 1971).

The supposedly Pro-Life Republican Party held control of both hoses of Congress for twelve years, as well as the White House for six of those years. Not once in that time was such an action offered by the Congress, nor even suggested by our supposedly ´Christian conservative President.

Republican candidates who claim to be Pro-Life, have only paid lip-service to those of us who are disgusted by the practice of abortion on demand. It should be evident to conservatives that the Republican Party is not serious about their supposed Pro-Life stance and will never take the necessary steps to end the slaughter of innocent life.

It is incredibly hypocritical for our federal officials to criticize other nations for their human rights abuses, while those same people sit by and watch as innocent babies are murdered in their own country. The next time you hear someone complaining about the hundreds of thousands being dying in Darfur...Remind them of the 48,000,000 babies who have been killed right here at home!

If we are ever to end this nightmare through political means, we the people must create and support a viable third party dedicated to protecting innocent human life. The Republican Party has failed us miserably and it is now time to move on.
